We are fully into Pumpkin Month now (aka, October), and you might be looking for some autumn/fall book suggestions to add to your TBR.
Well, though I am adamantly a summer person, I do love the All Hallow’s Eve season, and it’s got a great atmosphere for reading! Here are some of my recommendations for this time of year:
Cinder – Marissa Meyer
One of my favourite books of all time, I would pretty much recommend this book all year round! But, fairytales have a particular extra something during October, so I think now is the most perfect time to read it (Cinder is a futuristic retelling of Cinderella). Just make sure you’ve got the sequels – you’ll want to read them all at once!
Added bonus – if you can stretch them all out to December, that’s the perfect month to read Winter, the last book in the series. So starting now is even more ideal!
The 5th Wave – Rick Yancey
This book… legit terrified me. It’s not endorsed as a horror, but something about it really freaked me out. Like, to my core. So, if you’re looking for something eery and spine-chilling this Boo Season, I recommend this. It’s dark, and mysterious, and on-the-edge-of-your-seat, can’t-stop-reading good.
Fangirl – Rainbow Rowell
If you’re not looking for something scary, back-to-school novels are also a good call for autumn/fall, and it doesn’t get better than Fangirl. This book is truly one of my favourites, and it secured Rainbow Rowell as one of my ultimate, instant-buy authors.
Following timid, creative writer Wren as she starts her first year at college, you’ll be swept up in the beauty of her story even more with all these new-term/semester, back-to-school vibes going on right now.
Anna and the French Kiss – Stephanie Perkins
Like Fangirl, if you want less scary and more ‘fresh start’, it doesn’t get much better than Anna and the French Kiss. An American teenager moves to Paris for her final year of high school – so there’s a new city, new school, new friends; everything is new. It’s perfect for the changing of seasons and a new school year.
Extra appropriateness – this book was originally written during NaNoWriMo, so its very origins are autumn/fall!
Panic – Lauren Oliver
This books crosses nicely between a back-to-school novel and mysterious, slightly dangerous plot, so it’s easy to recommend for October. Though not my ultimate favourite book on this list, it’s worth a read and suits the season well.
Stardust – Neil Gaiman
A magical, mystical adventure, this book has witches, and faeries, and, yes, stars. There’s magic, there’s some gore, even some strong violence – everything you could want in a book around Halloween. It’s not a horror, but it’s definitely adult, and it’s a brilliant, beautiful fun ride, especially for Pumpkin season.
A Discovery of Witches – Deborah Harkness
The clue is in the title – this book was basically designed for October! A witch falls in love with a vampire. Is there anything more that screams All Hallow’s Eve? Wonderfully written, it’s received praise all over the place; you can even finish the book and then binge watch the TV show over Halloween weekend.
